Molokai

The island of Molokai has very special meaning for me. I was commissioned in 2001 to paint the portrait of Mother Marianne, who followed in Father Damien's footsteps after he died. This is the view from the Kalaupapa peninsula. It is one of the most beautiful places in earth, and yet was a place of great sadness and suffering during the time of quarantining of those then known as lepers--a sad chapter in Hawaii's history.   However, out of the suffering came great love, joy, and kindness as manifested by not only Father Damien and Mother Marianne, but also the wonderful patients themselves.   This is my impression of the sunrise over the eastern end of Molokai.
