Romance of the Moana
| Waikiki's historic Moana Hotel opened March 11, 1901. As the "First Lady of Waikiki", it has hosted royalty, movie stars and diplomats from around the world. This was one of my most difficult paintings. I started by spending a morning at the Moana, photographing and sketching from this vantage point. However, when I was faced with a black sheet of paper, it took me many weeks to get the composition and perspective correct. I drew it many times! Once the composition started taking shape, I grew more comfortable with the challenge of painting the detail that you see here. I've hidden six black cats in this painting and a little nightgown in the window. |
